CHICAGO — A deputy fire chief is credited with saving the life of an Arlington Heights police officer who was shot in the face while responding to a call of a man threatening his ex-girlfriend with a gun, authorities said today.

Officer Michael McEvoy, 54, was the first to enter the home Thursday night and was shot in the chin by a 41-year-old gunman, who had been charged less than a week ago with harassing the ex-girlfriend and had an order of protection against him, authorities said.

Arlington Heights Deputy Fire Chief Ken Koeppen happened to be visiting relatives in the 1900 block of Windham Court and rushed to aid the officer. Koeppen said he was eating dinner with his father-in-law when he saw flashing lights outside.
