NEW YORK — It’s a week that’s all about safety, but also about fun.

The FDNY kicked off Fire Prevention Week at Rockefeller Center on Oct. 11, with fire safety education, demonstrations, and the swearing in of dozens of Junior Firefighters and EMTs.

“The best way to fight a fire is to prevent it,” Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said. “That’s why this week is so important to us. We want to work together to save lives and make New York City the safest city in the world.”

Children from schools in all five boroughs visited the Plaza to learn valuable fire safety lessons and take the oath as Junior Firefighters and EMTs.

“You now have a very important role in the FDNY,” said Chief of Department Edward Kilduff. “We need you to go home and deliver a message of fire safety to your families.”

The annual event also included firefighters and EMS members demonstrating the work they do each day, including a vehicle extraction and high-angle rescue.

“Today is your day to learn fire safety from the best of the best fire professionals,” said Tom Madden, Managing Director of Tishman Speyer, who provided the space for the annual event.

At the event, it was announced that Matchbox® was donating $100,000 to the FDNY Foundation. In addition, a portion of the sales from Matchbox® Smokey The Fire Truck™ at the FDNY Fire Zone will benefit the Foundation.
