SAN JOSE, Calif. — Firefighters extinguished a house fire on the 200 block of Moraga Ave. Sunday morning. The fire was mostly contained to the roof and attic, said Capt. Michael Van Elgort of the San Jose Fire Department.

Only one person was in the house when it caught fire — but a smoke alarm woke her up and she was able to get out in time, said Van Elgort. “Smoke detector saves another life,” he said.

The fire displaced the family of four that lived in the two-story structure, but no one was injured.

Van Elgort estimates the fire inflicted $200,000 worth of damage to the house.

Firefighters arrived on scene seven minutes after they got the call, even though they were initially given the wrong address. The 25 firefighters who responded got control of the blaze within 51 minutes.
