London fire officials worry over residential fire safety during Olympics

Fire chiefs are concerned that Olympic landlords will fall foul of fire safety laws, putting lives of temporary visitors at risk

The Newham Recorder

LONDON — With the Olympic Games only months away, fire brigades in Newham are taking action to make sure casual landlords looking to make a profit this summer comply with fire safety regulations.

London Fire Brigade has written to letting agents advertising “Olympic rooms”, asked companies to publish advice on websites and contacted the council and other organisations that may deal with Olympic landlords.

If anyone resides in a property during the Olympics — or at any other time — it must comply with the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005 which compels homeowners to carry out a fire-risk assessment and act to address hazards, fit fire detection and warning systems and make sure there is an adequate escape route that guests know about.

London Fire Brigade’s Newham borough commander, Wayne Brown, said: “It is essential that those Londoners thinking of making a bit of extra cash by letting out a spare room during the Games are aware of their responsbilities under the law.

“The message is simple — look around your home, make sure it is safe, ensure paying guests know how to get out in the event of a fire and install adequate smoke alarms.”
