PITTSBURGH — Two teenagers tried to ignite the grand finale of the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta a day early, authorities said on Sunday night.
The two were shooting fireworks toward a barge near the West End Bridge that held fireworks for use in tonight’s 25-minute-long regatta display.
The pair had consumer-grade fireworks that are illegal in the city, authorities said. The city’s Fireworks Strike Team confiscated them.
The teens were not taken in custody, but police said they would investigate, Deputy Fire Chief Colleen Walz said.
The teens were hiding in bushes on the Mt. Washington side of the Ohio River, police officer Lynda Page said.
Walz said the fireworks were fired from above the barge but wouldn’t specify where. No damage was reported.
Private security officers patrolling for the regatta reported the incident about 8:30 p.m.
“I just wish parents were a little more responsible in keeping fireworks away from their children,” Walz said.
