Fire dept. paramedics help visually impaired man pay bills, buy groceries

After responding to a welfare call, the paramedics found the man had been having trouble paying his phone bill and doing other necessary activities

SAN FRANCISCO — A group of paramedics helped a visually-impaired man with bills and groceries after responding to a call to check on him.

SF Gate reported that paramedic Andre Velasquez, paramedic Nelson Avelar and emergency medical services Captain April Bassett responded to a call to visit the man at home after he had not been heard from in a while, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

The crew learned that the man had been having trouble paying his phone bill and getting groceries. After contacting social services to get him assistance, they decided to help him out themselves.

According to a statement, the paramedics helped the man pay his phone bill and drove him to a grocery store to help him buy groceries. They also made sure someone was there to keep an eye on him while he waited for social services.

"Good to know that there are good people still," a Facebook commenter said. "This hits closer to home then you think. I have a son who is visually impaired and it is good to know that there are people that still look out and care."
