TIGARD, Ore. — A local fire and EMS department launched a pilot program this week that will equip off-duty responders with AEDs.

Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue responders will carry AEDs while off-duty and will be notified when a cardiac emergency in the area occurs.

Through a partnership with the PulsePoint Foundation, Philips Healthcare and International Association of Firefighters Local 1660, firefighters, paramedics and EMTs will be given AEDs. It will allow every department personnel the ability to aid a cardiac arrest patient.

The pilot program will help gather data to gain clinical insights on future lifesaving strategies and practices.
