INDIANAPOLIS — While many of the new high-tech products and new apparatus stole a lot of the show at FDIC, one respected manufacturer had a few new wares to show that were just as important. 3M was showing off two of their newest reflective material products, which they refer to as visibility solutions, directly marketed for first responders.
The newest addition to the 3M family is the 5807 Custom Cuttable Transfer Film, which is a highly customizable product for nearly any type of apparel. For fire personnel, it’s specifically aimed for fire station wear, although it can also be used in a number of applications requiring high-level visibility. The 5807 film is a particularly cost effective product, and made to be so in both small and large orders.
“We can do custom logos with individual names. It’s very cost efficient in short runs and can be housed by local embroideries,” Paul Maturen, marketing manager for 3M’s protective apparel and footwear marketing center, said. “The response has been really good. We’re seeing it from anywhere from fire station wear to sports teams with corporate logos.”
According to 3M, the 5807 was designed to provide a way for fire departments to identify team members and roles in an emergency, as well as to enhance responder visibility during routine tasks.
“Scotchlite reflective material — 5807 custom cuttable transfer film gives emergency response departments a double benefit — enhanced visibility and personalized apparel to ensure the safety of responders,” said Howard Tolliver, marketing manager for 3M’s Visibility and Insulation Solutions business.
3M was also showing off their Scotchlite Reflective Material Series 5500 Comfort Trim vest. The series represents the industry’s first comfort segmented trim, and offers three versions: the 5510 Segmented Home Wash Trim and 5530 Segmented Industrial Wash Trim. Both offer improved moisture vapor transmission for a number of different conditions, a wide range of flexibility, wash durability and a commitment to meeting reflective performance standards.
“It’s popular with folks who are handling traffic and working roadways. What’s unique is that it’s breathable and comfortable,” Maturen said.
From the trade show floor, one only had to look around at the various turnout gear providers to see 3M’s reflective materials on everything from jackets and coats to turnout boots.
