New APCO Project to Address VoIP and Emerging Technology Location Delivery Challenges
Washington, DC — The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International announced today the establishment of APCO Project 41 — VoIP and Emerging Technology Location Delivery Challenges. The new APCO project will be a part of Project LOCATE (Locate Our Citizens At Times of Emergencies) and will address the impact upon operational practices facing the public safety communications community specific to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and related technologies.
Specifically, APCO Project 41 will develop partnerships with vendors and service providers to improve the location information provided, provide public education to manage the expectations of consumers, and create an effective practice guide to include technical and operational alternatives for public safety answering point (PSAP) response.
“We must acknowledge the new and expanding challenges related to location data delivery of emerging technologies that will continue to plague the public safety community and APCO members,” APCO International President Wanda McCarley said. “This is particularly important now as we are reminded of national security and emergency preparedness.”
