NITRO, W.Va. — Nitro City Council members agreed Tuesday night to spend $6,875 for the installation of all new digital radio equipment for city fire department.

According to Capt. Shawn Alderman, this upgrade needed done as soon as possible because neighboring cities like St. Albans have already upgraded their fire department radio systems. Alderman also said that the radio antennae system is also out of date and should be replaced by 2011.

City Treasurer John Young suggested that not all of the radios should be replaced now, as the city should look into buying a new firetruck in the near future. Council members decided to go ahead and complete the installation now.
