5 Chicago firefighters injured in collision

CHICAGO — Five firefighters and two others were hurt when a fire engine collided with a vehicle in the South Shore neighborhood Saturday, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 5 p.m. at 67th Street and Jeffery Boulevard, Chicago Fire Department Chief Joe Roccasalva said.

Firefighters were responding to an automatic alarm in the 8000 block of South Brandon Avenue when the crash happened, he said.

Two firefighters were taken to Trinity Hospital, two to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and one to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

One was in serious-to-critical condition, while four were in fair-to-serious condition.

Two people from the vehicle were taken to Northwestern in critical condition.
