Car crashes into Mass. fire truck; 1 firefighter hurt

The firefighter was treated for minor injuries and was later released; two other firefighters were shaken but declined treatment

WORCESTER, Mass. — Three people, including a firefighter, were injured when a car collided with a fire truck Sunday.

Telegram & Gazette reported that the fire truck was responding to a fire call with its lights and sirens on.

“As it went through the green light it was broadsided by a vehicle,” Chief Geoffrey Gardell said. “The (fire) truck sustained major damage and the car ... was totaled.”

The fire truck was driven a short distance to clear the way for the patients to be removed from the heavily damaged vehicle, which sat in the middle of the intersection, according to the report.

The driver and a passenger inside the car were taken by ambulance from the scene. Chief Gardell said one of the victims sustained a serious head injury, according to the report.

The initial fire call turned out to be a problem with the smoke detector system that caused the alarms to sound.

The firefighter taken to the hospital was treated for minor injuries and was later released. Two other firefighters were “jostled around” and declined to be taken to the hospital.
