COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. — The Colorado Springs Fire Department saved almost $200,000 by choosing to refurbish an existing fire engine rather than purchasing a new one. “About 53 to 54 percent of new is what we’re saving,” Dan Cass, CSFD Fleet Supervisor, said. Department officials unveiled the refurbished pumper engine Wednesday morning.

The department spent $172,542 on the refurbishing. A new pumper would have cost $371,000. Cass said they try to refurbish every truck once they reach 12-15 years old. “The engine needed rebuilding, transmission, all the suspension components, breaks,” Cass said.

Engine 4 was a 1997 engine, but after a trip to the shop it looks brand new. It looks new, it feels new, it probably just doesn’t have that new car smell,” Lt. J.J. Halsey, who works on Engine 4, said.
