A sinkhole near the intersection of University Drive and Lincoln Street trapped a fire engine and sent water streaming onto University Drive, from Lincoln to Brady streets, closing it off to traffic.
The call came in to Ada County dispatch about 7 p.m. Monday that a water main broke near the Boise State campus. The fire engine that responded ended up sliding through the pavement and getting stuck in the hole.
Boise police, Boise fire, Ada County Highway District and Suez Water all were on site dealing with the situation.
Boise State University students were advised through the university’s emergency response system to stay away from the area.
Suez turned the water main off about 9 p.m., but water continued to flow down street. A tow truck tried to free the engine but wasn’t powerful enough, so a second larger truck was sent for at about 9:30 p.m.
Crews worked through the night to free the fire truck and stop the water. As of 9:30 p.m., BSU’s campus was still without water.
The university will do what it can to make sure classes go on as scheduled but students and faculty should check for updates, said BSU Associate Vice President of Communications Greg Hahn.
