Md. firehouse fire destroys apparatus

By FireRescue1 Staff

DUNDALK, Md. — Two fire trucks were destroyed in a fire at a Baltimore County, Md., firehouse Wednesday morning.

The fire at Dundalk Station #6, which began at about 2:40 a.m., also destroyed two medic units, a brush truck and a Maryland National Guard Humvee.

One of the fire trucks destroyed had only recently been purchased for $600,000 and had yet to be put into service. The fire caused the roof to collapse at the firehouse, but no one was injured.

Firefighters in the living quarters were sleeping when they heard a smoke alarm. When crews opened the door to the engine bay, they saw fire and heavy smoke and evacuated the building. The roof of the bay collapsed at 2:47 a.m. At 3:55 a.m., several manhole covers exploded about a block away due to a natural gas leak.

Firefighters were able to drive one engine out of the bay before the fire took hold. It took about two hours to bring the fire under control.
Officials have not yet released an estimate of the total damage, nor have fire investigators determined a cause of the fire.
