IRONDALE, Ala. — A firefighter is in critical condition after he collapsed inside a house while putting out a fire.
AL.com reported that firefighters had put out the fire and were conducting overhaul when the firefighter collapsed.
Firefighters on scene started CPR and advanced life support and took him to a hospital where he remains in critical condition, according to the report.
“We’re all holding our breath right now,” Fire Chief Randy Davis said. “It’s going to be a waiting game for the next couple days while they’re treating him.”
The firefighter has more than five years on the department, according to the report.
“It’s a pretty dangerous job for our firefighters and it hits us pretty hard when we see one injured,” Chief Davis said. “It’s a reminder about the hazards of the job and how suddenly things can change on you.”
A post on the Irondale Police Department’s Facebook page said the firefighter was undergoing hypothermic therapy.
