LISBURN, Northern Ireland — The acting head of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service has apologised after the north’s ombudsman criticised the decision to remove a memorial to those killed in the 1987 Enniskillen bombing from the town’s fire station.
The photographic memorial was taken down following a complaint in 2007.
On Monday ombudsman Tom Frawley said the fire service had been wrong to remove the memorial.
Acting chief fire officer Louis Jones apologised yesterday.
“It was never our intention to cause any distress in relation to this sensitive matter, nor to diminish the devastation caused by the bomb,” the fire service said.
The service said it would consider the ombudsman’s report.
