Call forced-entry command

Tips

By Mark van der Feyst

When using forcible-entry tools to gain entry through a locked door, it is important to make a concerted effort to call the commands. There will be two firefighters involved in this operation with one operating the halligan bar and the other operating the flat-head ax or maul.

The striking tool hitting the halligan bar will create some substantial noise. This noise will prevent both firefighters from hearing each other. When a strike is required, it needs to be called for by the firefighter holding the halligan bar. Only when it is called will the striking firefighter hit the halligan. When no strikes are required, the halligan firefighter needs to yell “stop.” These commands will eliminate confusion and prevent unwanted strikes or injuries.
