WINNIPEG, Canada — When a firefighter is trapped in a burning building, every second counts. Waiting for rescue could cost a life.
With that in mind, Winnipeg has become the first city in Canada to outfit its firefighters with the Petzl personal escape system, a device that retails for about $400 but is priceless for those whose lives it saves.
Firefighter Lionel Crowther spent a day this week training his Winnipeg colleagues, showing them how to hook on to something secure then climb out the window and employ a braking system on the rope to rappel down the outside of the building.
