RAE Systems Expands Offering of Personal Radiation Detectors for First Responders with GammaRAE II Responder

SAN JOSE, Cal. – RAE Systems Inc. (AMEX: RAE), a leading global developer and manufacturer of rapidly deployable, multi-sensor chemical and radiation detection monitors and networks for homeland security and industrial applications, today introduced the GammaRAE II Responder, an addition to its personal radiation detector (PRD) product line. The first intrinsically safe combined radiation detector and radiation dosimeter, the GammaRAE II Responder features two sensors in a single instrument. Its fast-reacting Cesium Iodide sensor detects gamma radiation at extremely low levels and quickly alerts first responders to the presence of radioactive material and aids in intercepting illicit "dirty bomb" material. Its second sensor, an energy-compensated PIN diode, provides high dose rate range coverage and accurate dosimetry measurements.
Designed as a front-line security and first response device, the GammaRAE II Responder provides life-critical, real-time detection of hidden radiation sources and delivers instantaneous feedback to law enforcement, border checkpoint personnel, HazMat teams, firefighters and cargo port screeners, all while tracking their radiation exposure.

Being certified intrinsically safe for Class 1, Division 1, Groups A, B, C, and D means that the GammaRAE II Responder will not initiate an explosion in environments where flammable gases, vapors or liquids are present. This is important for responding to incidents at chemical and industrial facilities, as well as other locations where these chemicals might be used or stored. Intrinsic safety certification is critical for first responders, HazMat teams, firefighters, and law enforcement, and the GammaRAE family includes the only personal radiation detectors on the market with this certification from both UL (US) and ATEX (Europe).
The GammaRAE II Responder is designed for use in rough environments. It is immersible (IP67) in water for easy decontamination, and a concussion-proof case provides shock protection if the detector is dropped. The two-button operation is designed for use even in Level A protection suits with two layers of gloves.
The GammaRAE II Responder features a fast, two-second response time. This is critical when searching for a radioactive source. The instrument also has multiple alarm modes with bright flashing LEDs and loud audible and vibration alerts. Alarm modes can be set to operate in "Search Mode," based on local background radiation levels, or "Safety Mode," providing high and low alarm levels based on absolute dose rates. The GammaRAE II Responder records readings and alarm information in a 30,000-point datalog, which can be downloaded via Bluetooth® radio to a computer using the included software.
