With so many important issues facing the fire service, it’s useful to step back and review where things stand and where things are going. That’s the goal of ESO’s annual Fire Service Trend Report, which looks at current industry directions on key matters facing the fire service in America.

Focus areas for this year’s report include:

  • Prioritizing the mental health and well-being of personnel, including building comprehensive mental health programs, tracking critical incidents and promoting cancer prevention.
  • A continued focus on retention and recruitment with measures such as improved budgets and school pipeline programs.
  • A shifting environmental landscape, with growing demand for training and prevention efforts around the wildland urban interface and greater focus on green energy sources.
  • Real-time, data-driven insights to impact change, including preparation for next year’s introduction of NERIS (the National Emergency Response Information System).
