SALEM, Mass. — City leaders and firefighters are calling for the person who reportedly stole a firefighter’s helmet from the station on Lafayette Street to return it to its owner.
Mike Buonfiglia, assigned to Engine 1, reported Saturday morning via Facebook that his helmet was stolen from the apparatus sometime overnight.
“Had my fire helmet stolen out of the truck I was on last night. It’s irritating knowing someone would do something of that nature,” Buonfiglio wrote in an update on his Facebook profile.
He explained that their helmets mean a great deal to firefighters and hopes someone will return his.
“Not sure if they know the value of it or what, but I feel ashamed,” he wrote. “This was something I planned on having my whole career.”
A police report indicates that someone entered the firehouse through open garage doors and took the helmet from the truck sometime after 2 a.m. Saturday. The theft was reported at 8:05 a.m. that morning.
The helmet is described as a black firefighter helmet with an Engine 1 shield. The helmet also has a “Boston Strong” sticker and a “Kevin O’Boyle” sticker. There are no witnesses or suspects, and no surveillance cameras to work with, according to police dispatcher notes.
