New Recipients of Firefighter Grants Announced

Tubbs Jones Announces Most Recent Assistance to Firefighter Grant Recipient

WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones is pleased to announce the most recent recipient of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) -- Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program is the Euclid fire Department in the amount of $1,000,000.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) -- Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grants award funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help increase the number of firefighters and enhance their ability to ensure that their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards. These awards will help fire departments attain 24-hour staffing and meet minimum firefighter standards. SAFER grants will be awarded to fund two activities:
1) Hiring of Firefighters and 2) Recruitment and Retention of Volunteer Firefighters.

The Hiring of Firefighters grants are five-year grants and will assist fire departments by paying a portion of the salaries of newly created firefighter positions. Grantees must maintain the number of active, authorized, and funded positions declared at the time of application in addition to the new SAFER supported firefighter positions throughout the period of performance (five years), or risk losing all or a portion of their grant. Additionally, grantees will be required to match an increasing proportion of each SAFER supported salary over the period of performance. In the fifth year of the grant, awardees must absorb the entire cost of these positions. Volunteer, combination, and non-profit career fire departments are all eligible to apply for assistance under this activity.

“It is very important that we continue to provide funding and resources to our firefighters and all of our first responders as they are our first line of defense should we be faced with a situation that threatens our security,” stated Rep. Tubbs Jones. “These funds will help our communities better serve the residents of the 11th Congressional District.”
