NVFC Adopts National Unified Goal for Traffic Incident Management

At its annual spring meeting on March 31, the Board of Directors of the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) adopted the National Unified Goal (NUG) for Traffic Incident Management as proposed by the National Traffic Incident Management Coalition (NTIMC). The major objectives of the NUG are to address responder safety; safe, quick clearance; and prompt, reliable, interoperable communications.

The NTIMC, which developed the NUG, is a group of more than 20 national organizations, including the NVFC, representing the many disciplines that respond to typical traffic incidents. NTIMC member organizations represent emergency communications, emergency medical services, fire, law enforcement, transportation, and towing and recovery. The NUG marks the first time such a broad coalition of incident responders have joined together to develop common policies to address common concerns.

NTIMC will achieve the major objectives of the NUG – responder safety; safe, quick clearance; prompt, reliable, interoperable communications – by implementing 18 strategies. There are five cross-cutting strategies that address all three major objectives of the NUG. These strategies include:

Recommended practices for multidisciplinary Traffic Incident Management (TIM) operations and communications;
Multidisciplinary TIM training;
Goals for performance and progress;
Promotion of beneficial technologies; and
Partnerships to promote driver awareness.
