Dallas Fire-Rescue Department officials this week will demonstrate a water rescue mat from First Alert that allows firefighters to literally “walk on water” in the event of a water or ice rescue. The mat reportedly can be deployed in seconds and holds up to 1,000 pounds.

DFR and First Alert plan to unveil the device Saturday morning at the Hilton Anatole Hotel as part of the 2009 Fire-Rescue International Conference and Expo being held in Dallas through Saturday.

DFR’s water rescue team will demonstrate the 25-foot-long, five-foot-wide floating device, which allows emergency personnel to walk or crawl over out to rescue points over ice or water.
