SAN DIEGO — The driver of a big rig was rescued early Tuesday after his vehicle went off a freeway off-ramp in Otay Mesa, overturned and hit a tree, authorities said.
Firefighters and others worked for about 90 minutes before they could extricate him from the wreck, officials said.
The injured man was taken to a hospital. His condition was not known.
The incident began around 2 a.m. when the truck went off the Siempre Viva Road off-ramp from southbound Interstate 905, officials said.
Crews used special equipment to stabilize the vehicle and then lifted the cab with a commercial big rig tow truck, San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Kyle Kutzke told OnScene TV.
He said firefighters from San Diego and Chula Vista worked with Border Patrol, the California Highway Patrol and other agencies to rescue the driver.
“We had a lot of agencies here working together and a lot of different type of technical experts,” he said.
