TOLEDO, Ohio — A Toledo man who was hit by a hose that came loose from a passing fire engine died Wednesday in Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

A ruling on the cause of death is pending test results and a review of hospital records, said Dr. James Patrick, Lucas County coroner. “The trauma he had was not something that in and of itself would be totally responsible for his death,’’ Dr. Patrick said.

Lonnie Holmes, 59, was riding his bicycle on Hawley Street near Indiana Avenue about 4:15 p.m. Saturday when the hose struck him and at least three vehicles.

Mr. Holmes told Toledo police he was hit by the hose, wrapped up, and thrown to the ground before he could do anything. His tibia and fibula were fractured, Dr. Patrick said.

Police said the fire engine was en route to an emergency with its lights and sirens on.
