RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Racers from all over the country and even the world congregated for the 40th annual Fred d’Elia Memorial Day Ridgewood Run, but it ended up being one of the village’s own who stole the show in a race against time Monday morning.
Ridgewood firefighter Lt. Brendan Corcoran set a Guinness Book of World Records mark for running the mile wearing full firefighting equipment, clocking in at 6 minutes, 45 seconds, well ahead of the previous record pace of 7:58.02 as hundreds of onlookers cheered him along.
“It’s nice to do it in your home town where you have support and you know people,” said Corcoran, 37. “I’ve been doing this race off and on since I was 7 years old in some form. It’s a great event.”
