Authorities in Texas, Ok. brace for potential of more wildfires

OKLAHOMA CITY - Firefighters were mopping up grass fires Saturday that have charred 30,000 acres across Oklahoma, destroyed 100 homes and killed one person, while authorities braced for the potential of more fire outbreaks in warm, windy weather.

``So far so good, but, officials are anticipating heightened fire activity through Tuesday,’' Jack Carson, a spokesman for the the state Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry said Saturday.

Oklahoma has been locked in a dry spell, with winds easing at night and in the morning and then increasing in the afternoon. Dozens of fires began in the state Tuesday when winds gusted to more than 40 mph. Similar winds were expected Sunday, while winds Saturday were reaching in 15 mph to 20 mph. The state is more than a foot behind its normal rainfall of about 36 inches for this time of year.
