Fire contained in Pennsylvania’s Tussey Mountain-area

By State College Centre Daily Times (Pennsylvania)

HARRIS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The wildfire behind Tussey Mountain Ski Resort was contained early this morning, with some firefighters remaining at the site throughout the night to keep watch over the dying blaze.

The fire, which began about 1 p.m., may have been sparked by a downed power line, an Allegheny Power spokesman. The resulting blaze drew firefighters from throughout the county, surpassing three alarms.

Firefighters worked furiously into the night yesterday to battle flames on the ridge behind the ski resort. Fed by 45 mph winds, the flames were reported at times to be shooting 80 to 100 feet into the air.

Boalsburg Fire Company Assistant Fire Chief Carey Asendorf said crews would be at the site today to use a GPS system to measure the size of the blaze.

“It is a fairly large area,” he said.
