NEW YORK — Firehouse Files, a new podcast hosted by Steve Buscemi, Marian Fontana and retired FDNY Lt. Dennis Gordon, has debuted with a special episode marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
The episode, titled “Never Forget,” features retired New York City Fire Commissioner Dan Nigro, who was serving as the FDNY’s chief of operations when the attacks began on Sept. 11, 2001. It is available on YouTube, with the podcast’s full first season scheduled to premiere in January 2027.
Nigro recounts crossing the Brooklyn Bridge toward the burning World Trade Center with Chief of Department Peter Ganci and the decisions made as the scale of the attack became clear.
“This is going to be the worst day of our lives. And we can’t put out that much fire,” Nigro recalled telling Ganci.
The episode also addresses the loss of FDNY leadership that left Nigro in command following the attacks. Buscemi, a former New York City firefighter, and Gordon discuss their experiences at Ground Zero and during the recovery effort.
Fontana discusses the death of her husband, FDNY Firefighter Dave Fontana, on 9/11. She later founded the September 11th Families Association and advocated for 9/11 families through 2005.
The conversation also covers survivor guilt, trauma and mental health in the fire service, 9/11-related illnesses and the long-term effects of loss.
Firehouse Files, produced by Audio 99 and Olive Productions, is centered on firefighters and first responders recounting calls that have remained with them throughout their lives and careers. Olive Productions was formed by Buscemi and Wren Arthur.
