Milwaukee firehouse responds to first structure fire 48 hours after reopening

Station 31 was one of five fire stations closed in 2018

MILWAUKEE — Firefighters from Milwaukee Firehouse 31 responded to a house fire on Jan. 9, just 48 hours after the station reopened.

Station 31 at 8th Street and Hayes Avenue was one of five fire stations closed in 2018.

The blaze caused significant damage to a two-story home near 9th Street and Lincoln Avenue. According to the fire department, all occupants safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported, WISN reported.

“It gives the neighborhood back a measure of safety when it comes to firefighting and emergency medical services,” Deputy Chief Ron Firnrohr said. “If they weren’t here, fire companies from much farther away would take a greater length of time getting in here. The fact that they were in service ensured a very quick response time and ensured that the damage was kept to a minimum.”

Firnrohr said the station has responded to several calls since its reopening but this was the station’s first structure fire.
