NEW LONDON, Texas — A veteran firefighter died Saturday after being critically injured in a Feb. 28 tanker crash.

KXXV reported that New London Fire Department volunteer firefighter and former Mayor M.V. Hudson, 86, was rescued from the water tanker along with two other firefighters after it slid off the highway and flipped over, according to Chief Curtis Riley.

“The fire department is going to feel his loss and the community in general, not only the fire department and police department, but we all are,” New London Police Captain Jason Parker said.

Hudson began his fire career almost 50 years ago, and colleague and friend John Hendon remembered their first call together in a 1941 fire truck.

“We had gone through training together, fire training, firefighting, the whole ball of wax,” Hendon said. “It’s just one of those things you have to deal with and sometimes, it’s not easy.”
