HOMEWOOD, Ala. — An Alabama fire chief died Friday after being found unconscious in his office.

Homewood Fire Chief John Bresnan, 59, was discovered unresponsive from unknown causes while at work and was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Homewood Fire and Rescue.

Bresnan began service at the department in 1987 and was promoted to fire chief in 1992. He was the longest-standing professional fire chief in Alabama.

“Chief Bresnan was a good man and a great leader in our fire department,” Homewood Mayor Scott McBrayer said in a statement. “He served our city of Homewood and her residents with humility and distinction and will be greatly missed.”

Bresnan’s funeral will be held on Jan. 15. Mourners are asked to donate to Australian wildfire efforts, marine life conservation or the Dauphin Island Sea Lab in his memory.
