FRISCO, Colo. — A Colorado firefighter died Saturday morning after falling from the roof of a five-story condominium.

Summit Fire & EMS Firefighter Ken Jones, 46, was on the roof trying to find access to the fire when he fell 60 feet to his death, according to Summit Daily.

“To say the least, we are all devastated,” said Summit Fire Deputy Chief of Operations Travis Davis at a news conference. “This is the biggest nightmare that any fire department across the country will ever face.”

Jones served at Summit Fire & EMS for 20 years. His death is reportedly the first on-duty death in the department’s history.

Another department was called to help battle the fire after Jones’ fall, and no other injuries were reported.

The fire and fall are under investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, according to the department.

Jones is survived by his wife and two children, 11 and 13

“He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. He was a firefighter’s firefighter,” said Summit Fire & EMS Chief Jeff Berino. “He’s been a valued member of our family for many years.”
