THOROUGHFARE, N.C. — A North Carolina firefighter died at the hospital after suffering a medical emergency at a fire scene on Sunday.

Thoroughfare Volunteer Fire Department Safety Officer Joe Tucker, 62, was driving the department’s Engine 2 before complaining of a medical emergency upon arriving at a structure fire, according to the Goldsboro Daily News. Wayne County EMS assessed Tucker and then immediately transported him to the hospital where he later died.

Tucker had been a member of the Thoroughfare Volunteer Fire Department since 2004.

The Wayne County Firefighters’ Association said the fire service was Tucker’s true passion and that he was married and had children and grandchildren, according to WRAL.
