Fallen firefighters memorial goes on despite shutdown

81 names added to the list of heroes after ceremony moved off campus; full video available

EMMITSBURG, Md. — Eighty-one names were added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial this weekend in Emmitsburg, Md.

The annual ceremony honored those who died in the line of duty in 2012. Due to the government shutdown, the memorial site was moved from the National Emergency Training center and instead held off-campus in another facility.

“Despite the federal government shutdown and the impact that it is having on the fire community’s memorial weekend events, it was critical to find a way for families to have the opportunity to pay their respects at the sacred site located on our campus,” said Chief Ernest Mitchell, Jr., administrator of the U.S. Fire Administration.

During the memorial, the annual presidential wreath laying took place and honored both returning survivors and new families from across the country to share experiences and to begin to look ahead.
