The Boeger family watched on as firefighters raised the large flag in the front yard of their destroyed home

CHEROKEE, Calif. — Firefighters replaced the American flag of a family whose home was destroyed in a wildfire.

Action News Now reported that the Boeger family’s home was almost destroyed in a wildfire once before, but a Cal Fire crew saved it as well as the flag.

“He folded it and put it on my couch, that’s how I found it when I got back that night; took my breath away,” Cade Boeger said.

Firefighters were not able to save the home the second time it was threatened by flames, but the Boeger family watched on as Cal Fire replaced the large American flag that they had previously preserved.

“Our emotions are a little different. We didn’t have a personal loss like they did, but we had a loss,” Cal Fire/Butte County Battalion Chief Russ Fowler said. “Our job is to save lives and property. When you take a stand and you do diligence and you save a structure, a building like this and then shortly after something like this tragedy happens, it just sinks in your heart.”

The firefighters purchased the flag through their benevolent foundation.

“We wanted to put the flag back up because it’s a symbol of American freedom, it’s also a symbol of them rebuilding,” Chief Fowler said.
