The nation’s fallen firefighters honored

The memorial weekend honors both returning survivors and new families from across the country to share experiences and to begin to look ahead

Every October, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation pays tribute to all firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. Thousands attend the memorial weekend in Emmitsburg, Md., which features special programs for survivors and fellow firefighters.

The memorial weekend honors both returning survivors and new families from across the country to share experiences and to begin to look ahead.

Traditionally, families who arrive at the memorial are escorted through a “Sea of Blue” leading to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial. Uniformed fire personnel will line the Walk of Honor to support and honor new families. Due the federal government shutdown, the ceremonies have been moved off site, but will otherwise run as planned.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation will provide live satellite broadcasts and web streaming of both the Candlelight Service and the National Memorial Service beginning Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern. Click on the video below to watch live streaming.
