EMMITSBURG, Md. — From Sept. 29 through Oct. 6, fire departments and landmarks across the U.S. will be lit from dusk to nightfall as a tribute to fallen firefighters.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) launched the Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters in 2017 to recognize the Foundation’s 25th anniversary and the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, according to NFFF.

Fire departments across the country are invited to light their facilities in red to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. NFFF officials recommend departments that do not have red lights to consider purchasing a red spotlight for the week.

The 38th Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend will be held on Oct. 5 through Oct. 6 and is considered the official national tribute to firefighters who perished the year before.
