SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Four California firefighters were injured in an explosion after responding to reports of a natural gas leak Monday morning.
Crews from Sacramento arrived at the scene of the vacant residence within four minutes of receiving the call and began assessing the situation.
Prior to entering the house, they shut off electrical and gas utilities and requested Pacific Gas and Electric to respond to the scene.
As firefighters entered the property, the explosion occurred, destroying the home. Firefighters from Engine Company 6 and Truck 6 received burns to their hands and face, and were immediately transported to University of Davis Medical Center.
Three of the four firefighters were reported to be in fair condition and remained in the hospital overnight for treatment.
The fourth firefighter was discharged from the hospital Monday after only requiring minor treatment.
Sacramento Fire Department Investigators are treating the area as a crime scene and are currently working to determine the cause of the explosion.
