NORTHBROOK, Ill. — Neiman Marcus is settling a wrongful death lawsuit involving a Northbrook firefighter who suffered fatal injuries in an explosion at its Northbrook store 10 years ago.
The Neiman Marcus Group Inc. and voltmeter-maker Amprobe each agreed to pay $2.5 million to settle a case brought by the estate of Wayne Luecht, who died of burns suffered on the job at Northbrook Court, said Philip Harnett Corboy Jr., one of the Corboy & Demetrio lawyers representing the estate. Another firm, Wigdahl Electric, settled with the estate in 2006 for $3.5 million.
Following a power failure June 21, 1999, Northbrook Assistant Fire Chief Luecht, 48, and several Neiman Marcus employees went to the store’s basement electrical vault to inspect transformers, when one of them exploded and a fire erupted. Luecht died from his injuries 10 days later.
