URBANA, Ohio — As many as 24 B-25 bombers from across the country will gather at Grimes Field in Urbana next month in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders before heading to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
On Wednesday, firefighters from Wright-Patt and the Urbana Fire Division met at Grimes field to view the planes and develop a plan in case of an emergency.
Tom Printz and Randy Kemp, who helped perform maintenance on the Champaign Gal, a B-25 at Grimes Field, provided a tour of the planes and discussed issues like how to turn off the plane’s electrical systems and how much fuel the plane carried.
“It’s just a familiarization for them,” Printz said.
Mark Keller, chief of the Urbana Fire Division, said although it’s unlikely, firefighters will be on hand throughout the event in case of an emergency.
Beginning April 14, bombers will gather at Grimes Field, offering rides and allowing residents to get a glimpse of the planes.
On April 17, the planes will depart from the air field on their way to a reunion at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
