YUKON, Pa. — A woman was burned in an apartment fire on Saturday morning in Yukon, South Huntingdon Township.

The fire at 122 April St. was confined to an end apartment in the four-apartment complex, said Joe Waywood, second assistant chief of the Yukon Volunteer Fire Department. It was reported at 5:30 a.m., according to the emergency management dispatch center.

The woman, who lived alone, also suffered smoke inhalation, Waywood said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was flown by emergency helicopter to West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh.

The other tenants of the building were evacuated.

Waywood said the three remaining apartments were not damaged and residents could probably return.

One firefighter slipped and fell while battling the blaze in 20-degree weather. He was not seriously injured, Waywood said.

“It was nasty,” Waywood said of the wintry conditions. “There were sheets of ice” on the ground.

Despite the inclement weather, firefighting operations were not hampered seriously, Waywood said.

“It was under control in two hours,” he said. “The rest was mop-up.”

A complicating factor was a water main break on June Street that flooded a basement. Because of the two emergencies, eight fire companies worked in Yukon yesterday.

Waywood said he was unable to pinpoint the origin of the fire. Most of the damage was confined to the first floor. The second floor sustained smoke and water damage.

Waywood said an investigation is under way to determine the cause.
