To give firefighters unfettered access, many buildings have a lock box mounted to the exterior that contains a set of master keys. Firefighters have exclusive access to the box with a single master key carried on the fire apparatus.
Over time the key cylinder of the lock box will accumulate dirt and grit from the exposure to the elements. This will prohibit the fire department master key from being able to being pushed in all the way to unlock the box.
Carry a small can of WD-40 or some other product that can be easily applied to the cylinder bore to free up the pins on the inside.
