Poisonous plants pose hazards

With wildfire season approaching in some areas in the coming weeks, it’s a good time to remember the dangers posed by poisonous plants. Burning logs or branches often contain urushiol, which can cause systemic reactions and respiratory attacks. The toxic susbtance is found in poison ivy, oak, and sumac plants. In order to combat potential problems, protective clothing should be worn to prevent the toxin from coming into contact with skin. In addition, because urushiol can bind to equipment, thick rubber gloves should be worn when handling things such as hoses and tools. Symptoms of exposure include rashes, swelling and blisters.
