PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Two people were seriously injured in an ‘explosion; Wednesday afternoon in Portsmouth, according to fire officials.
Fire crews responded to a warehouse in the 700 block of Mount Vernon Avenue following a report of an explosion at about 6:23 p.m. When they arrived, there was heavy smoke coming from the doors of the building.
Two people were found inside, fire officials said. They had serious injuries and were taken to a Norfolk hospital for treatment.
Firefighters focused on a large boat inside that had caught fire. The fire was extinguished by 7:02 p.m., according to Portsmouth Fire Rescue and Emergency Services. The building was heavily damaged by fire and smoke.
No firefighters were injured in the incident. The fire is considered accidental, a spokesperson said in a news release.
