SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Pecan Creek Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a day-long fundraiser to help with the cost of building its first fire station.
Pecan Creek Community Fun Day will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 801 Ranch-to-Market Road 584 on Saturday, July 15.
The department has been in operation for 23 years and has never had a fire station, said Mike Dominy, the department’s board president.
“All of our trucks are scattered in several areas — members’ homes, businesses,” he said. “Right now we have five (trucks).”
Pecan Creek VFD has 15 volunteer firefighters who cover 133 square miles between San Angelo and Christoval.
Saturday’s fundraiser will offer a $10 barbecue plate sale, a $1 per hit car bash and $1 raffle tickets for a chance to win gift cards and four tickets to a Dallas soccer game. Door prizes also will be offered.
In addition, there will be several activities for children and adults — live vehicle burn demonstration, bounce house, water slide and other firefighter games.
Money raised will be put toward construction of the fire station.
The plans are for the building to be constructed in two phases costing roughly $182,000 for the total project. Phase 1 will be the apparatus bay that houses engines and equipment, according to the department’s website.
Phase 2 will be attached to phase one and consist of the “people parts” of the station such as an office, training/conference room, meeting room, bathrooms, and a day room/bunk room.
The San Angelo Health Foundation awarded the department $90,000 toward its goal, and the department raised $1,560 during the San Angelo Gives event in May.
There are a few other grants still pending, that if approved, will go toward helping with fire station’s cost, and if everything goes right, the groundbreaking could start in August, Dominy said.
