SACRAMENTO, Calif. —Less than a week after three Sacramento firefighters were rescued from a burning home, a scammer is asking people for money, claiming to be collecting donations for the firemen, the city’s fire department said Saturday.
"(Scammers) wait for the opportune time and when they strike, they strike quick and hard,” said Roberto Padilla, a spokesman for the Sacramento Fire Department. “And they try to take as much as they can in the shortest period.”
The firefighters were hurt after rushing into a burning home in South Sacramento, believing the residents may have been inside, fire officials said Monday. Two of the firemen suffered burns after falling through a floor and into the basement; a third suffered smoke inhalation.
