HENRY COUNTY, Va. — A military ammunition explosion sent two Henry County men to the hospital Thursday.

Two Axton men, Marcus Chism and his friend Mike Venable, were burning wood scraps at Venable’s uncle’s house when the fire got out of control, ignited the ground then spread to the shed, said Rodney Howell, Henry County fire marshal.

There was military ammunition being stored in the shed that caught on fire.

As of Saturday night, Venable remained in critical condition at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Chism was treated and released, according to Allie Buth, Carilion spokeswoman.
